Traditionally Goats rue was used to increase breast milk production in breastfeeding women. It was also used traditionally to remedy water retention and to promote healthy blood sugar levels. Goats rue contains compounds from which the famous anti-diabetic drug metformin (glucophage) was manufactured. This supports its traditional usage of blood sugar management. Goats rue (Galega officinalis) should not be confused with another herb, Rue (Ruta graveolens) which has different properties.
